Guardiola confusing players

Former Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce believes they need to be more consistent with their team selection and tactics to see results improve
Former Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce believes Pep Guardiola's lack of tactical consistency is confusing his players.

Guardiola's methods have come under scrutiny in recent weeks after a poor run of form which has seen City win just four of their past 15 games.

Last weekend's 4-2 defeat to Leicester came after a 3-1 loss to Chelsea the previous week and City have now fallen seven points behind Antonio Conte's Premier League leaders.

At the King Power Stadium, Guardiola began with a back three of Bacary Sagna, John Stones and Aleksandar Kolarov, with regular right full-back Pablo Zabaleta deployed in an unfamiliar midfield role.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola responded to criticism of their style of play after their 4-2 defeat at Leicester
The Spaniard quickly abandoned that formation when Jamie Vardy scored the first of his three goals for Leicester in the third minute and Pearce believes that sends a bad message to the players.

"I was at the Leicester game at the weekend when they got beaten and they started with three at the back and conceded a goal after two and a half minutes," Pearce told Premier League Daily on Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday.

"They changed to four at the back after two and a half minutes of a game.

"You set your team up all week to play in a certain way and then it only takes a goal after two and a half minutes to change your whole tactical approach to the game and personnel.

"The main thing coming out of Manchester City at the moment really from I can gather through friends of mine who are associated with the club is they never know what team is going to be played or what formation is going to be played in any game or at any time during any game."

City have conceded 19 league goals in 15 games this season, eight more than Chelsea and Tottenham who have both let in only 11 so far.

Chelsea can move six points clear at the top of the table if they can claim a 10th consecutive league victory with three points at Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The Sunday Supplement panel feel Pep Guardiola's tactics are confusing his Manchester City players and is causing them to be caught out
Conte has introduced a 3-4-3 formation in which his players are thriving and Pearce believes City would benefit from a similarly-consistent approach from Guardiola.

Pearce said: "When you look at teams in the Premier League that are not conceding goals such as Chelsea, they have got a consistent line-up and a consistent shape to their team.

"I can pick Chelsea's team. I know it already - we all do - and you know the formation.

"Manchester City, I don't think actually at this moment, from the manager to the team, believe in what they are trying to achieve to get a result."

Oscar set to move to China

Chelsea midfielder Oscar is "90 per cent" certain he will be moving to China in January.

The 25-year-old Brazil international is out of favour under Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge and looks set to join up with his former boss Andre Villas-Boas at Shanghai SIPG, with Chelsea set to receive a reported £52m for the player.

Oscar told Brazilian network Globo: "It's 90% right. It just depends on some bureaucratic details."

The former Internactional star has not started a Premier League game since September.

If the move goes through, Oscar will have a Brazil team-mate for company in Shanghai - striker Hulk is also on their books.

Andre Villas-Boas will be Oscar's new boss if the move goes through
His former Chelsea team-mate Ramires is plying his trade in China too with Jiangsu Suning and a second, Demba Ba, plays for city rivals Shanghai Greenland Shenua.

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson was sacked as Shanghai SIPG coach last month, with Villas-Boas taking over.

Wenger: angry

Arsene Wenger speaks to referee Mark Clattenburg at the final whistle
Arsene Wenger has criticised referee Mark Clattenburg's decision to award Everton the late corner that led to Ashley Williams' winner in Arsenal's 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

The Gunners conceded from a corner for the first time in the league this season after Clattenburg decided Laurent Koscielny, not Everton substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin, got the final touch in the Arsenal box.

Williams headed home the resulting set-piece in the 86th minute, completing the hosts' comeback after Seamus Coleman had cancelled out Alexis Sanchez's deflected free-kick.

The defeat saw Arsenal miss the chance to go top of the Premier League table, with league leaders Chelsea to play Sunderland on Wednesday, and Wenger admitted he was left "really disappointed" by the decision.

Watch Ashley Williams score a late winner for Everton as they ended Arsenal's unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park
"It was not a corner," he said. "You could see from our side it was no corner.

"But I think we have to live with a wrong decision and it does not explain why we did not head the ball after.

"I think I am really disappointed because Clattenburg was in a very good position to see they headed the ball out and it's not the first time we are unlucky with this decision this season.

"Overall, I do not want to speak about the referee too much. It is not my problem."

Arsenal had looked in control when Williams turned Sanchez's free-kick past Maarten Stekelenburg after 20 minutes, but poor marking allowed Coleman to equalise on the stroke of half-time.

And after Williams took advantage of more slack defending to score the winner, Wenger conceded his side lost urgency in the second half.

Williams (5) heads home Everton's winner
"I think we have to look at ourselves," Wenger added. "We lost the game, I felt we started well and after that maybe lost a bit of urgency because we were a bit too comfortable and Everton made it very physical.

"Overall, I believe that from then on it disturbed our game and we created less flow going forward.

"In the end we didn't take our chance or two, we didn't create many but we had clear-cut chances in the game that we didn't take, and after that you can be caught on a corner away from home."

Zlatan :my game has evolved

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored eight Premier League goals so far this season
Zlatan Ibrahimovic wishes his 25-year-old self could have had his current mindset so he could have been “even more phenomenal”.

The 35-year-old Swedish star has scored goals and won titles all over Europe during a glittering career.

Midweek PL Goals!

But he feels his game has evolved with age and wishes he could combine the experience he has accumulated with the athleticism he possessed in his younger days.

"I think I play much more intelligently now because, of course, you change a lot during the years," Ibrahimovic said.

"You get a different physique; you get a different condition, strengths and experiences. But I wish I had the mind that I have today 10 years ago, because then I will be even more phenomenal."

Ibrahimovic has scored eight goals in 14 Premier League games for United this season.

Jose Mourinho had words of warning for Luke Shaw ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash at Crystal Palace
Jose Mourinho made signing the veteran striker a priority after succeeding Louis van Gaal and has already indicated he intends to trigger an option to keep Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford next season.

Ibrahimovic says he has become less focused on scoring goals and instead has learned to adapt his game to help the rest of the team.

"I try to help in every way I can with my experience and the goals will come," Ibrahimovic said. "I try to help in many ways without the ball, with the ball, with movements, by communicating, by sacrificing.

"It is part of the game and as a player I want to be as complete as possible, so this is one of the things I have been trying to do."

Marcus Rashford wants to learn from Ibrahimovic at United
Ibrahimovic has acted as a mentor to younger United players such as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial since arriving and it is a role he has embraced.

"Goals are extra, a bonus let's say," Ibrahimovic said. "If I score then I help the team, but I think I can help in many ways and this is the experience thing.

"Marcus is a young player, his career has just begun and I am towards the end of my career."

Riyad Mahrez

BREAKING!! Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez Wins BBC’s African Footballer Of The Year Award 2016

Riyad Mahrez has been crowned the BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016.

Fans from across the world voted for the Algeria and Leicester midfielder ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Andre Ayew, Sadio Mane and Yaya Toure.

Winger Mahrez, 25, told BBC Sport:

“It means a lot, it’s something big for African players so I am very happy, I am very proud.

“It’s always good to receive awards and for African players it’s a huge honour. To all the fans, thank you very much.”

He added: “Also I want to thank the Algeria fans and dedicate this to them as well and for my family.

“I just have to carry on and keep going with my football and see what I can do.”

The award caps an exceptional year for Mahrez, who had already won the English Premier League title and was voted Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.

It is further recognition for his outstanding form as Mahrez, whose family comes from the small town of El Khemis in Algeria, took the Premier League by storm.

He was a driving force in Leicester City’s shock title triumph, scoring 17 goals and providing 11 assists as the Foxes pulled off what had been a 5,000-1 shot before the season.

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieiri was in attendance as Mahrez received his award and paid tribute to the winger.

“I want to see him continue as a fantastic player,” the Italian told BBC Sport. ” It’s very important for us, for the team. He is improving every day.

“I don’t speak about his quality. I speak about his sacrifice, he has fought for the team because it’s very important for us to be together.”

In May, Mahrez became the first African to be voted the best player in the league by his fellow professionals, only two years after he had joined Leicester from Le Havre for £400,000.

Victor moses

‘I Have Been Frustrated At Chelsea’- Super Eagles Star Victor Moses Reveals

Chelsea forward, Victor Moses has admitted that his different loan spells left him frustrated.

The Super Eagles star signed for the Blues from Wigan in 2012, but after the return of Jose Mourinho, he was sent on loan for three consecutive seasons to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham, respectively.

However, Moses is enjoying a new lease of life under Antonio Conte, but still recounted some of his dark times.

“I’ve been a little bit frustrated, I’m not going to lie,” Moses told Sport Magazine .

“You spend about a month-plus in the hotel before you find your own place to stay – stuff there kind of plays in your head, and obviously the kids have to go to another place, go to school.

“I’ve not actually had time to relax. When the season finishes, you have to move back to London again, and those kind of things play in a footballer’s head”, he added.

Moses has scored three goals in 14 league appearances this term.

What Ronaldo has to say

See What Ronaldo Had To Say After Winning His Fourth Ballon D’Or Award

Cristiano Ronaldo has described 2016 as an “unforgettable” year, after he won the Ballon D’or prize for the fourth time in his career.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star accrued 745 points from a jury of 173 international journalists, to finish ahead of rival Lionel Messi.

In 2016, Ronaldo won the Champions League with Madrid and captained his country to their first international title at Euro 2016.

And the 31-year-old, who has 51 goals to his name for club and country so far this year, told L’Equipe: “Winning the Euros, the Champions League and now the Ballon d’Or is unforgettable.

“This year was the best of my career, both at an individual and at team level.

“For me, it’s a great honour to receive my fourth Ballon d’Or. The emotion is the same as in the past. The dream becomes reality.

“Winning a first trophy with Portugal was still missing on my CV. It was one of the most important moments of my life. I will obviously not forget about the Champions League win either.

“The difference is that Madrid are used to winning trophies, Portugal had never won a major trophy. I do not want to disrespect the Champions League, but winning the Euros with Portugal was something special, on another level.

“I must thank all my team-mates. You can imagine how proud I am to receive this magnificent trophy.

“What is more important, win a fifth one or win again with Portugal? I think both are important to me. I will try to give the best of myself, as every time.

“The team always comes first for me. I would not have won this trophy without Real Madrid and Portugal. But I would like to enjoy this moment today, I am very happy.”

Guardiola in trouble

“Manchester City Could Sack Me Anytime From Now” – Guardiola Says

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has admitted there is no reason why the club cannot sack him if he fails.

The Spaniard has seen his side slip to fourth in the Premier League, after taking 12 points from their last nine fixtures.

Although City are now seven points behind leaders Chelsea, Guardiola insists there is time for him to turn the slump around.

“Long-term projects don’t exist in football. You have to win immediately, if you don’t win you will be in trouble,” Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City’s game with Watford on Wednesday.

“When you don’t win there are many reasons — maybe the opponent is better. Always when you make mistakes you have to minimise the mistakes to win the games. I believe in that. I believe in what I like to play. If I am not able to do that, the boss and the chairman are going to decide.”

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager, also insisted he has no plans to ditch his playing style, despite their 4-2 loss at Leicester City last weekend.

“I want us to play like we did against Chelsea, which is not a long time ago,” Guardiola continued.
“I saw the game again and we didn’t deserve what happened. Football is like that.

“Kevin was one metre from the goal, and to score the goal in that moment, or for Sergio to shoot when there was no goalkeeper, at that moment we would be top of the league. Now we are seven points down. Sometimes these things happen in football but you have to improve because we have made a lot of mistakes in situations.

“I have to discover how I can help my players, because they don’t want to make mistakes. The players suffer the same as me and the staff and the people. You have to minimise that because it’s tough for us.”

C. Ronaldo

“I Would Have Won More Ballon D’Or If Messi Was My Teammate” – C. Ronaldo Opens Up

Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he might have won the most prestigious individual award more than his rival, Lionel Messi if both of them had played in the same team.

Cristiano Ronaldo has told France Football he believes he might have won the Ballon d’Or more times than Lionel Messi if they had played on the same team, but described his rival as “a great player.”

Barcelona forward Messi, 29, came second to Ronaldo, 31, in the 2016 vote, but has five Ballons d’Or to the Real Madrid man’s four.

Portugal captain Ronaldo polled a massive 745 points over 400 more than Messi in this year’s poll, which canvassed a handpicked panel of journalists worldwide.

On whether he would have claimed the award more times had they played on the same side, Ronaldo said: “It’s a difficult question. I don’t know.

“It would be interesting to see both of us in the same team. I think great players should play together. So if we were in the same team, I think I would have more than him, but he wouldn’t be far off.

“Everyone knows Messi is a great player. He’s won five Ballons d’Or.”

He said he was hopeful he would draw level with the Argentine star’s tally in 2017, saying: “I’m going to try. I’ll be in the fight, as always, but my objective now is to win the Club World Cup, an important trophy.

“After that, to win La Liga. It’s a title that Real wants to win. And if possible, the Champions League again and the Copa del Rey. I always want to win everything.”

Though Madrid missed out on the league title despite his 35 goals in 36 league games, Ronaldo won the Champions League as well as Euro 2016 with Portugal

A brace from Emmanuel Ogbonna helped the Super Sand Eagles secure victory against Ahmed Abdelrazak’s side on Tuesday
Nigeria made a wiinning start to the 2016 Caf Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Egypt 3-2 at the Eko Atlantic.

A double from Emmanuel Ogbonna and captain Isiaka Olawale’s strike were all Adamu Audu’s men needed to begin their campaign on a winning note despite Mohammed Hassan and Ahmed Sayed equalizing for the north Africans.

In what proved a closely contested affair early on, the sides remained goalless until Olawale gave his side the lead with a header following goalkeeper Abdelaziz Ibrahim’s failure to make a simple catch.

The second period belonged to Egypt and in particular Zayed, with the forward weighing with a leveler after Hassan had pulled one back to set up an enthralling final frame.

A fine strike from Ogbonna in the closing minutes of the third quarter effectively sealed the contest late on, as Audu’s men claimed early momentum.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo beats Lionel Messi to win Ballon d'Or

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for a fourth time on Monday night, beating Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to world football's top individual prize for 2016.

Ronaldo, who previously won the award in 2008, and in 2013 and 2014 when it was officially the FIFA Ballon d'Or, is only the second player to win it a total of four times, trailing only Messi's record of five.

The honour caps a memorable year that saw Ronaldo win the Champions League with Real Madrid and the European Championship with Portugal -- the country's first major footballing silverware.
